Bel Air's roofs were the first hardening mandate in LA

When the 1961 Bel Air Fire jumped Stone Canyon on 50 mph Santa Ana winds, the homes that burned were overwhelmingly the ones with wood shingle roofs. Embers landed, roofs caught, and 484 houses were lost while many tile-roofed neighbors survived.

Los Angeles responded with what was effectively California's first home hardening law: a ban on wood shingle roofs in new construction, plus stringent brush clearance requirements. Modern ember science, led by IBHS test-lab work, has since mapped every other pathway embers use.
